In the best traditions of the Internet, this group was formed in response
to patent claims by the Unysis corporation concerning the GIF standard.
(See <http://www.xmission.com/~mgm/gif> for details.) It has become
a design group for a significantly better format for images requiring
lossless compression, namely, the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format.
